SCHOOL WATCH

Within Neighbourhood Watch, we have all taken responsibility to protect our homes and those of others, we also care about our area and community we live in. It is a known fact that within Neighbourhood Watch Areas, crime figures are down, and we take pride in knowing that we are all working as a team to make this area a better place to live in and bring up children.

Taking pride can go a lot further. We are made aware of crime and vandalism within our schools. Our children’s education suffers when the schools are made to pay for the damage that plague many of our schools either locally or nationally. School Watch could be the link. It has worked in Schools in Stevenage, elimination vandalism and burglary.

It has also been introduced in other parts of the country too, working together to make crime within our schools a thing of the past.

We can all be involved, parents, pupils, teachers, governors and neighbours working within our own community to make schools as safe as we would make our homes.

Children from 4 to 15 spend at least 6 hours a day at school and we all wish to make this environment a safe an d happy place, to learn, and develop social and moral skills.

We are all responsible and by launching School Watch we can make another area of which we live in safe and free of crime.

A message from the Mobile Phone Centre the Sponsors of School Watch throughout Stevenage.

Schools’ being vandalised is an ongoing problem in many towns, including Stevenage.  Vandalism costs the community vast amounts of money, furthermore it causes disruption and concern for safety.

First introduced in 1995, the School Watch scheme was developed solely to prevent vandalism taking place in schools.  School Watch is a link between schools, parents and local police with the following aims:

  1. To reduce the opportunity for crime and to make it difficult for criminals
  2. To build up a community spirit
  3. To save money for education as opposed to this being spent on repairs to school property

The message is clear:

‘Crime does not pay and prevention is more effective than cure’.

Soon after the scheme was introduced vandalism at the Leys school reduced substantially and over a period of time was wiped out altogether. Between 1995 and 2000, the Leys School Watch team saved the school a massive £20k in insurance claims.

MPC, Mobile Phone Centre Stevenage based in the Westgate Centre is the exclusive sponsor of the School Watch scheme. Their role in this scheme stems from the fact that they like to get involved and support local community issues.  To protect the safety of School Watch members the local police have instructed that they carry a mobile phone with them when checking the school premises.  MPC Stevenage has and will continue to supply schools with suitable mobile phone packages. Schools’ that introduce the School Watch Scheme are given free School Watch signs funded by MPC Stevenage. The signs clearly help to relay the message and are widely recognised throughout the area.
